In Japan, some foods in supermarkets are discounted just when a shop is about to close, in order to sell the food before it passes its expiration date. It’s labeled with special labels, from 10% off, up to even 50% off. Usually after a food passes its shelf life, it’s thrown away, so this discount benefits the store and the customer. This is “mottainai,” the spirit of Japan. Now this idea is used all over the world.
